AUDIO-AMMUNITION.com SEP 2015 All the reviews I read about this record, which are mostly in German (thank you Google translate!) always mention two things: 1. Is that there is a girl in the band (the lovely Ms. Lulu Sabbath on the Bass) and 2. That they’re from Belgium (the French speaking town called Tournai located in western Belgium and one of the country’s oldest cities). So there, now I don’t feel left out! Now for the music, this is the bands 3rd release and second full length. Their self-titled debut, which came out in 2011, was pretty much a straightforward Sonic type wild ‘60’s garage rock n’ roll barnburner. Now it seems that the years have matured thee Gays just a bit. This new record is a fantastic blend of killer ‘60’s garage mixed with the Velvet Underground’s dark twang and jangle, all of which are coated in a healthy layer of reverb. Thee Marvin Gays do a really good job of writing songs with a consistent sound yet diverse and unpredictable enough to grab a hold of your attention and keep it in a tight grasp for the duration of the LP. DIG IT#63 Bien qu'ils portent un blase qui scandalise à chaque fois mon dealer de vinyle préféré, ça marche plutôt bien pour les Belges Marvin Gays qui sortent leur deuxième LP chez le label berlinois Alien Snatch Rds (outre les deux albums, ils ont aussi un 10” sur Kizmiaz). Et ça commence fort avec deux titres plus violents qu'à leur habitude, "No Pigs No Rats" et l'incroyable fuzz de "Nightmare"... On revient à du plus sixties avec "Inside My Head", on aborde la powerpop sur "Confusion", sans réellement s'y vautrer. C'est un peu la marque des Wallons, toucher à tout pour donner naissance à leur truc à eux... Et je dois dire que ça marche parfaitement sur ce Sleepless Nights. Country foutraque et velvétienne sur "Upright", mantra psychédélique à la Oh Sees pour "Keep Your Head High". Un vrai tube à la Broods pour débuter la face B, "Good Things Are Gone", chanté par Lulu (la fille) et on patrouille entre garage- psyché et des trucs plus méchants jusqu'au final surf latino (un peu quand même non ?) "Not The Good One Anymore"... Et c'est d'ailleurs comme ça qu'on pourrait définir l'évolution du groupe, "on n'est plus les gentils !" Très bon disque. (GC)


MOLOKO PLUS Fanzine (April,2015) Gute Pop-Songs erkennt man daran, dass sie keiner wirklichen Pop-Rezeptur folgen, dass explosive Melodien sich nicht mittels eines Beipackzettels entschlüsseln lassen und wenn die operierende Band weder nach formatierten Hörfunkformaten noch nach einem überambitioniert skizzierten („they tried too hard!“) Kasenetz/Katz-Template klingt. Beispiele dafür? THE FEVERS, WHEELS ON FIRE, SUSPICIOUS BEATS, MOJOMATICS, undundund... Zufällig gewählt sind die nicht, sondern können sich – ebenso wie das Ensemble, um das es hier gehen soll – mit dem kleinen Alien Snatch-Logo auf der LP-Rückseite brüsten, das weniger Handelszeichen als Zertifikat für Punkrock mit Distinktionsgewinn und Charakter ist. Günstige Winde spielten mir seinerzeit die Vorgänger-Scheiben der „three dudes and one girl“ (Selbstbeschreibung) aus dem belgischen Tournai (oder Doornik) zu – eine LP auf Frantic City und eine 10“ auf Kizmiaz. Endlose Begeisterung blieb aus. Zu knöchern, zu grobschlächtig wirkte ihr happy-go-lucky Fuzzpunk. Die DNA war dennoch bloßgelegt: zurechtgerücker Mid Century-Maurerbeat (THE REMAINS, THE HAUNTED, MONKS) und Räucherstäbchen-Janglepunk (ELECTRIC PRUNES, SEEDS, 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS) vor einer einer zeitgemäßen Kulisse (DEMONS CLAWS, DEADLY SNAKES, HELLSHOVEL). Lange Referenzliste mit entsprechendem Renommee, dennoch wirkte der Garage-Psych der THEE MARVIN GAYS zu nervös – Missbrauch von Reverb zwecks Kaschierung unzureichend ausgearbeiteter Arrangements lautet die Nebenklage. Mit ihrer mittlerweile dritten Veröffentlichung kriegen THEE MARVIN GAYS nun den Fuß in das Top Shelf der unfassbar Output-schwangeren französisch-belgischen Garagepunkszene und in die Frenchedelia-Noblesse – und das, obwohl noch nicht einmal Lo’ Spider hier mitgepfuscht hat. Kratzige Vocals treffen auf eine stürmische, upbeat Instrumentierung. Da bleibt viel Raum für Einförmigkeit, der hier glücklicherweise jedoch unbesetzt bleibt. Ihr Fuzzdrench-Psychpop ist in ähnlicher Machart wie bei TOGETHER PANGEA oder THEE OH SEES zentriert auf dynamische Basslines und lakonischen, blasiert-nasaligen Gesang, gepaart mit klirrenden Gitarrenakkorden, bleibt dabei aber weniger ruppig – erfreulicherweise! „Sleepless Nights“ schlägt Brücken zwischen einer GUN CLUB-Rückschau, Sixties Popsike, avantgardistischer ELECTRIC EELS-Eigenbrötelei und einer BFTG-inspirierten Surfrock-Strandpatrouille mit Reverb-Überschwung. Glorreiche Pop-Akzente gibt es per VERMILLION SANDS-Sondervergütung auf hohem Soundlevel. Pebbles auf Speed mit spätsommerlich-melancholischer Note: grobkörnig, hook-beladen und ohne Scheu vor poppigem Good Vibes-Shingaling. Das alles macht THEE MARVIN GAYS jedem Fall geiler als die ganzen Schrotttruppen, in denen drei grauenvoll frisierte „Dudes“ in Feinripp und Truckermütze das Fuzzpedal im Badezimmer-LoFi-Modus voll durchdrehen und damit zum next big thing auf dem SXSW avancieren, abgefeiert von Kids mit mit kleinen Mützen aber zu großen Pullovern. So wird „Sleepless Nights“ zu einer überraschend guten Platte, wenn nicht sogar zu einer großartigen. Sie bringt einen dusseligen Bandnamen und ein wenig repräsentatives Artwork mit guter Musik auf einen Nenner – alles richtig gemacht, kann man meinen.... als würde man in einer Sektlaune auf die grandiose Idee kommen, den rotieren „Teenage Shutdown“-Sampler etwas hochzupitchen.
