maximumrocknroll.com (US) April 2020 ALEX CUERVO’s “Everybody Disappear” is one of my favorite songs of all time. Since I have listened to it innumerable times, it was odd to hear it starting off this album. Not that it is a surprise since CUERVO is in EERIE FAMILY along with Alyse Mervosh—both also of the HEX DISPENSERS. This version of the song is different from the original, but a great song is great in any incarnation. It’s moody and slow, but unlike the other songs on this LP has an upbeat lyrical tone. The label calls EERIE FAMILY “gloom pop” which sounds just about right. The music brings me back to the late ’80s when the English goth rock bands decided they wanted to be cowboys. It’s keyboards and drums with a sparse, expansive sound. The vocals are lethargic and sullen. Perfect for a rainy, chilly winter day spent brooding in the house. Great record.

EERIE FAMILY are Alex and Alyse from HEX DISPENSERS playing music very much unlike Hex Dispensers. Their self-titled LP just released on New Year's Eve. Call it whatever you like: Goth, death rock, dark wave, or (as the label terms it) gloom pop. Any way you shake it, this is a gorgeously creepy creation that fuses elements of post-punk and synth pop with a spooky worldview and this duo's well-defined predilection for melody. I suppose an "upbeat" Goth song is a contradiction in terms, but opening track "Everybody Disappear" manages to be exactly that. It's as hook-laden as it is creepy, and that's really saying something. It's like a love anthem for ghouls, creatures, and zombies everywhere. "A Ghost Who Lives Inside Your Heart" is a chillingly beautiful number channeling the bleak minimalism of JOY DIVISION by way of The CURE and JESUS & MARY CHAIN. "Dead Stars Still Shine On Us Tonight" could not be more haunting, yet it pulls you in with captivating melodies and nicely harmonized vocals. "I Am Tarantula", told from the point of view of a feared creature that just wants to be loved, is driven by a fittingly playful synth line. "I Hope the Sun Explodes Today" is an old Hex Dispensers song that you might barely recognize. There's a refreshing simplicity to the structure of these songs. Every drum beat and keyboard note comes off carefully considered, and the vocals are eerie in a way that sounds natural and not comically overplayed (a frequent weak point for this genre of music). I'm not generally a fan of "dark" music, but I have been fully won over by EERIE FAMILY. Beyond all else, this is simply fantastic pop. It certainly doesn't hurt that Alex and Alyse have such splendid chemistry, and overall this is a perfect example of how to take death rock and make it full of life. "You only need enough friends/To carry your casket when you're dead" is some of the most profound wisdom I've encountered in a long time! (Josh Rutlegde)

OX-FANZINE.DE Issue #148 FEB 2020 Kürzlich dachte ich erst wieder an die verblichenen HEX DISPENSERS und fragte mich, was die Leute wohl so machen. Kein Kunststück, schließlich hängt ein Poster von ihnen bei mir im Schlafzimmer. Für Alex Cuervo und die Schlagzeugerin Alyse Mervosh kann das hiermit zumindest teilweise beantwortet werden, sie sind als EERIE FAMILY unterwegs. Anders als alles, was ich bisher von Cuervo kannte. Ruhiger, getragener, sphärisch und vollkommen tiefenentspannt, sofern man das bei einem kleinen Kribbeln im Nacken sein kann, denn den „spooky“ Sound hat er mitgenommen. Allerdings auf eine andere, angenehmere Weise. Gloom-Doom, oder wie man diese Schublade wohl nennen möchte, mir ist es gleich. Lass es dir rechtlich schützen, wenn es dir gefällt. Wunderschöne Lieder, mit melancholischer, leicht depressiver Note, einem leichten Zucken in den Schultern, weil ja eh alles egal ist. Dafür aber können wir in Würde und mit erhobenem Haupt gehen, soviel steht fest. Das Instrumentarium besteht lediglich aus einem slackerhaft bedienten Schlagzeug, das sich sehr zurücknimmt, und minimalem Synthesizer, der vor allem Moll bedient, um sich wie Bühnennebel auszubreiten. Dazu der untote Doppelgesang der beiden aus der hauseigenen Gruft, mit wunderbaren Melodien, die den Planeten längst verlassen. Das einzigartige PIXIES-Cover gibt es nur auf Vinyl, davon wiederum nur 500 Stück. 9/10 (KS)

666revolutionsparminute.blogspot.com JUNE 2020 Retour aux plaisirs simples d’une vie de débauche inutile. L’un de mes petits bonheurs post déconfinement a été de sortir de chez moi pour faire un tour dans les magasins de disques de la ville. Oh pas forcément pour acquérir à tout-va telle ou telle nouveauté mais pour avoir la satisfaction de tremper mes doigts dans les bacs de vinyles et de tripoter des pochettes de disques (note importante : ceci est aussi valable pour les librairies et les bouquins). On est bien peu de chose, moi le premier et je l’assume. Et voilà que maintenant j’ai envie de te raconter ma vie, enfin j’ai envie de la raconter encore plus que d’habitude et de te parler de ce disque publié le 31 décembre 2019 et qui à ce titre aurait pu tomber dans les oubliettes complétistes pour cause de referendum / top 50 / best of d’une année passée qui se termine toujours en avance (la faute aux dead lines exagérément peu flexibles et à la frénésie de nouveautés). Mais on oublie trop souvent que la musique est un vaste apprentissage du temps ainsi que l’une des plus belles façons de le tromper. Il est l’ennemi du chroniqueur de disques mais il est l’allié et le complice de l’amateur de musique. Voici donc un disque que j’écoute très souvent en ce moment et que je n’écoute que d’une seule façon : je ne fais rien d’autre en même temps, je suis tout à lui comme il est tout à moi. Rien que nous deux, seuls, et allongés lascivement sur mon vieux canapé rouge.Mais revenons-en au début. J’avais donc le nez dans un bac de disques lorsque je me suis retrouvé comme contraint et forcé de relever la tête et de tendre un peu mieux l’oreille. J’ai demandé au taulier du magasin ce que nous étions en train d’écouter et voilà ce qu’il m’a répondu : « ça ? c’est EERIE FAMILY le side projet de membres de The Hex Dispensers et c’est vachement bien ! ». Je résume, évidemment. Comme je ne vais pas trop m’étendre sur le petit sourire en coin du dit taulier qui me connaissant plutôt bien avait fait exprès de mettre ce disque en écoute tout en sachant pertinemment que j’allais gentiment le remarquer. Vendre des disques, c’est un vrai métier alors arrêtons d’en acheter sur des sites internet commerciaux tentaculaires. Je suis reparti chez moi avec ce premier album sans titre d’Eerie Family, duo composé d’Alex Cuervo (synthétiseur et chant) et d’Alyse Mervoch (batterie et chant), deux éminents membres de The Hex Dispensers (donc), groupe garage punk ultra culte qui avait stoppé toute activité en 2017 mais qui semble t-il aurait annoncé son retour pour 2021 et une tournée européenne – ça, on verra bien. Et en fait parler de side-project au sujet d’Eerie Family me semble plutôt incomplet et limitatif tant le duo possède son identité propre, très éloignée de toute forme de garage. Il n’y a (presque) pas de guitare sur ce disque mais – évidemment – énormément de synthétiseurs acidulés ou bourdonnants, égrainant des mélopées un peu mélancoliques ou des nappes sonores fantomatiques. Pourtant il n’y a rien de fondamentalement déprimant ici, plutôt une vision très intimiste et délicatement feutrée d’une musique avant tout basée sur des mélodies ténues mais persistantes, la complémentarité des deux chants, une énergie jamais démentie malgré le caractère délicat de l’ensemble et un mélange des genres (pop synthétique + rock atmosphérique + new wave + shoegaze electro + ce que tu y trouveras) réussi comme rarement. Pour s’en rendre compte il suffira d’écouter Everybody Disappear qui à la base figure sur le troisième album de The Hex Dispensers : les deux versions n’ont rien à voir mais sont toutes les deux excellentes. Même la (difficile) reprise du Wave Of Mutilation des Pixies s’avère convaincante parce qu’aussi personnelle que reconnaissable, ce que devrait être toute reprise digne de ce nom. Alors que je l’écoutais pour la quatrième fois de la journée je me suis mis à repenser aux effets étonnants et peut-être paradoxaux d’Eerie Family. Voilà un disque découvert (presque) par hasard chez un disquaire de la ville au cours d’une balade dans un monde plus ou moins réel et très loin de me convenir ; et voilà un disque qui me donne plus que tout envie de rester enfermé chez moi, pour l’écouter encore et encore. EERIE FAMILY propose une sorte de Pop Lo-Fi (mais pas trop) matinée de Rock narcotique (sans excès) avec un rien de Noisy Pop C86 revisité 2020, ça lorgne vers l’Indie Garage bricolo et l’Art Rock… sans oublier une touche de la froidure du Nord de l’Angleterre des early 80’s… disons que le plus important pour ce duo du Texas se sont les chansons et rien à branler des étiquettes !!! Ces enfants putatifs du Velvet mélangent voix féminine et masculine sur des tempo languides, comme si les Cowboys Junkies du début venaient de la scène Psych Garage… Ce premier album réalisé en double mixte fait la part belle aux architectures sonores réalisées grâce aux possibilités des studios sans jamais sombrer dans les travers de la musique pour musiciens. Gloomy Pop c’est ainsi qu’on les qualifie, pourquoi pas ! Tant il est vrai que leur musique se refuse à rentrer dans des cases prédéfinies ! Sombre et rampante leurs mélodies s’insinuent insidieusement en vous, et c’est un régal pour les oreilles et l’âme ! (BT)

shutupandplaythemusic.blogspot.com (France) Jan 2020 Two major punk bands from Austin blew up the power-pop/garage-punk scenes in the late-noughties : the Marked Men and the Hex Dispensers. The Alex Cuervo’s band left us back in 2015 with the awesome III LP on Alien Snatch Records x. This whole powered punk album, driven by the warm, intense voice of the singer, was fully counterbalanced at the end by a very last track, Hypersleep, with some beautifully melodious female vocals on a haunting, slightly grungy dark wave sound, that was potentially announcing a different musical orientation of the Hex Dispensers’ members. It is huge delight to find these two distinctive voices back on a new duo band : Eerie Family x. Alex Cuervo plays loud gothic organs, extending this way his synth-punk/ electro-space-rock Espectrostatic solo project, while Alyse Mervosh is on the drums. The simultaneous vocals successfully mingle with one another, the lyrics seem quite eerie, every doomed musical note or minimalist riff deeply resonates with the body, the weighing darkness of the electro-pop sound offsets the relaxing tempo on the drums and the clear sonority of the whole thing (the Marked Men Mark Ryan’s touch on the mixing/mastering?). This outer-space post-punk / no wave atmosphere is strengthened by the gloomy, weird front cover of the Lp. A really moving immersion into a depressive, dead-end world and a sound close to the Joy Division’s and Blank Dogs’quietest stuffs, the Kavinsky’ s soundtrack of the Drive movie, the Kaka Kids Records blast, or even the Pixies’ Wave of Mutilation song, this one being transcendly covered on the final track of the album. The German label, Alien Snatch Records, mostly involved in efficient garage punk/ power-pop bands, offered us lately last year an unusual release. The label is scheduling a European tour in August 2020. You now know how to spend your leisure time next summer ! (OM)
