maximumrocknroll.com (USA) June 2021 You don’t need to know that the GRUESOMES were Canadian or that they formed in the mid-’80s or that this album was originally released around 2000, but that is all probably helpful information. Here’s some better information: this is some amazingly catchy garage pop that will grab your feet and just start moving them. It’s mid-tempo and super melodic and it’s got a fuzzy guitar sound that will transport you to a garage full of wild teenage kids back in 1967. A couple of key things: one, it’s on Alien Snatch. Two, if Jon von (SACRED COWS, MR. T EXPERIENCE, RIPOFFS) was Canadian, he’d have been in this band. (KENNY KAOS)

Et je m’étais dis sur ce fugace survol : « ouai, bien, mais très classique »Ce qui s’avérera assez vrai, mais tellement au dessous de la vérité !!! Si vous êtes friand de Sixties Garage Punk avec orgue type Farfisa, harmonica de-ci delà, inspiration R&Beat 65, covers iconiques (mais pas trop nombreuses), et dans un esprit revival digne du meilleur des pionniers des 80’s (rien de plus normal pour un groupe fondé en 1985) alors cet album des Gruesomes est une pépite qu’il vous faut posséder rapidement ! Ça déboule comme le Maréchal Ney à Waterloo ! Démarrage bien classique avec un instru Fuzz guitar & Farfisa puis on enchaîne avec un killer track ! D’ailleurs ce « Cave-In! » en est remplit jusqu’à la gueule !!! L’ambiance, le style et l’intensité collent bien avec les impressions données par cette très belle pochette ! Je devrais dire de cette nouvelle pochette qui sert d’écrin à cette réédition de cet merveille sorti initialement en 2000. Si The Gruesomes n’étaient presque jamais sorti de leur Canada natal et que leurs rares disques n’étaient pas aisés à trouver car souvent sur des labels peu ‘cotés’ il existe de par le monde un noyau de fans hardcore qui se sont mobiliser pour propager la bonne parole. Ce qui aboutit à cette réédition, qui se place dans la très courte liste des must have du genre tant cet album à TOUT : les compos, l’attitude, un screamer, d’excellents musiciens, LE son idoine. ox-fanzine.de (GER) #156 JUN 2021 Nach nur drei Alben und zwei Singles war für die Kanadische Neo-Garage-Combo Schluss, bis sie nach etwa zehn Jahren 2000 für ein Reunion-Album wieder zusammenfanden. „Cave In!“ nannte sich das Werk, ein donnerndes Stück Sixties-Garage-Rock in bester Achtziger-Tradition, sprich Fuzz, Farfisa, snarly Vocals, Teen-Angst und Höhlenmenschen-Habitus. Ein guter Mix aus starken Originalkompositionen und einigen obligatorischen Coversongs („No no no no“ von den SORROWS, die PRETTY THINGS-Nummer „Come see me“, „Using your head“, WAILERS, sowie der THE JURY-Fuzz-Kracher „Who dat“), gespielt mit der Hingabe und Leidenschaft von ehrlich Sixties-besessenen Thirtysomethings. Alien Snatch hat dem lange vergriffenen Album nun einen neuen Release spendiert. Das eher langweilige Artwork des Originals wurde erfreulicherweise gegen ein viel stärkeres comicartiges Cover von Zeichner Furillo ausgetauscht. Ein starkes Album, auf dem die GRUESOMES beinahe mit noch mehr Druck auf dem Kessel als damals in den Achtzigern zu Werke gehen. (8/10)(GH)

This is the 2021 Re-Issue of "Cave-in!", widely considered as thee outstanding GRUESOMES album! The GRUESOMES are teen-trash gigants formed in 1985 and one our favourite garage rockers. The album is full of killer originals and couple awesome cover versions, soaked in the snarly vocals and punk fuzz guitars. Totally new artwork, tasty neanderthal grease by Furillo!

A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
